NASA ’s New Horizons proceed to bewilder as it disclose more and more about Pluto and its family of moons . Recently , New Horizons dazzled us as it shine back the first colour icon of Pluto , revealing a scaly , snakeskin - like surface . This calendar week , we see Pluto ’s brumous standard atmosphere in colour for the first fourth dimension , and surprisal …   it ’s blue !

" Who would have expected a blue sky in the Kuiper Belt ? It ’s gorgeous,“said Alan Stern , New Horizons principal investigator from Southwest Research Institute ( SwRI ) in   Boulder , Colorado .

While the actual speck that make up thehazeare most likely not blue , the colour of the haze tells scientists a great deal . They think the subatomic particle within the haze are most likely ruby or gray-haired ; however , based on the blue tint ,   the skill squad can determine particle size and opus . " A blue sky often results from disperse of sunlight by very small particles , "   said skill team researcher Carly Howett , also of SwRI . " On Earth , those particles are very bantam atomic number 7 atom . On Pluto they look to be with child   –   but still relatively small   –   soot - similar particleswe call tholins . "

First detected in the upper atmosphere of Saturn ’s synodic month Titan , tholin particle , like the ones on Pluto , are thought to mould luxuriously in the atm , and are produced by ultraviolet sunlight blast atmospheric organic compound . As essentially “ complex organic gook , ”   tholins can surface a planet or synodic month ’s surface and come in a salmagundi of colors look on what mote are present and how much radiotherapy they have . Lab experiment have shown that nitrogen and methane   –   both present in Pluto ’s atmosphere   –   can knuckle under red tholins . This can excuse the carmine Earth’s surface material on both Pluto and its largest moon Charon .

What makes this gunk so fascinating ? Well , tholins could have conditional relation for animation on other worlds as scientists have produced the introductory construction blocks of life ( amino acids ) intholin experiments . Tholins can also provide valuable insight into a satellite ’s aerofoil age and composition . This means if you have a world where tholins form regularly , any region lacking the organic gunk would either be very young or could even be subject to removal processes like rain .

As if dark haze was n’t exciting enough , New Horizons had another surprise for us this week :   water   ice on Pluto ’s surface . While there are n’t large area of let out ice , there are many small regions . The scientific discipline squad is currently investigate this discovery further , but thinks the regions of water   ice might be more extensive than what we currently see , and it could be masked by other types of ices . Jason Cook , a Pluto science team phallus from SwRI , said in astatement : " tumid surface area of Pluto do n’t show reveal pee ice , because it ’s apparently dissemble by other , more explosive ices across most of the planet . Understanding why pee appears precisely where it does , and not in other places , is a challenge that we are delve into . "

Spectral analytic thinking demonstrate that the location of the water   ice deposits seems to correlate with the bright ruby-red areas in the recentlyreleased coloration images . This is surprising and may show a relationship between the pee   deoxyephedrine and tholins that we do n’t yet cover . " I ’m surprised that this water ice is so crimson , "   say Silvia Protopapa , a science squad member from the University of Maryland , College Park . " We do n’t yet infer the relationship between water frappe and the reddish tholin colorants on Pluto ’s surface . "

New Horizons , currently 5 billion kilometers ( 3.1 billion miles ) from Earth , is in the thick of a year - long mental process to air back all the data collect during its flyby of the Pluto system .
