This preceding weekend atStar WarsCelebration Japan , Hasbrolifted the lid on what ’s follow this summer toits toylinesin a galaxy far , far aside . The reveals highlighted some of the good of whatStar Warscan be — deep cut of meat favorites , new takes on classic role — and above all proffer a much - demand reminder of the joyous absurdity of what collecting legal action figures can be .
The festivity , metaphorically and literally , could n’t have come at a good time . After a few grumblings about who was and was n’t getting glare among Hasbro ’s toy picks lately , and the hover precariousness hang over collectors and toymakers alike thanks to Donald Trump ’s back - and - forth trade state of war with the rest of the world , Hasbro and devotee likewise needed the reminder of why we ’re all concerned in this hobby in the first place … and they might have got it in the form of an unlikely mavin of their Celebration lineup .
To talk more about the reveals , Hasbro ’s relationship with theStar Warscommunity , and how the company is begin to respond to the fluctuating concerns over U.S. tariffs , io9 verbalise to HasbroStar Warsteam appendage Chris Reiff and Jing Houle on the show storey in Tokyo , Japan . fit out our full interview below .

James Whitbrook , io9 : Just a few years ago , the thought of you guy wire open a news show board like a shot with Expanded Universefigures felt like it would ’ve been impossible . What ’s led the design team to go embracing that side ofStar Warsrecently ?
Jing Houle : I feel like we ’re being more expansive , we ’re being more originative with things like Turgle and Dash . And I have a go at it that the team is bringing frontward these ideas , and this creative thinking , and the fan are receive it well . Fans have been tell us about digit and characters from the EU for a while , and ask for them , and I think that we ’ve show that Hasbro was uncoerced to do them , especially as we understand that there ’s paths for different people .
Like , maybe there ’s newfangled shows that get along out , and we want to do those , and then there ’s the nostalgic , and deep cuts , and publication , and we want to do those . Andthenthere ’s play in between , and we want to do those ! I call back there ’s a lot we ’re willing to explore because we know that there ’s a lot of fans for a sight of different things right now .

io9 : Dash was one of the big annunciation right out of the gate here . That ’s a character that there were so many different interpretation of duringShadows of the Empire — comics , the plot , plug-in art . Can you speak about the inspirations you drew on to make the sculpt for the figure ?
Chris Reiff : That ’s exactly it — it ’s inspiration from all those different generator , because we want to do thedefinitiveDash , and trying to figure out what that is when you have so many different one really takes an disingenuous eye and a really gifted team . I know Eric [ Franer ] and Tom [ Rego]—Eric being a clothes designer , Tom being a statue maker for Black Series — I know that the two of them become back and off and looked at a lot of dissimilar source , and really talked about how to blend everything into one and make a unexampled unique portrait , because in Black Series we get to do real versions of these things .
It ’s one that a lot of multitude have been comment on and asking about , but it ’s not based off of anybody . It ’s based off ofallthe Dashes , and trying to figure out what Dash looks like [ to us ] . I Feel like they did an amazing caper , and now that ’s going to be the definitive Dash , because it ’s the most real one .

io9 : You ’ve startle exploringShadows , we ’ve seenHeir to the Empirefigures like Joruus and Pellaeon . Are there other EU area the team is interested in exploring in the future tense , or are you sticking to these circles for now ?
Reiff : I mean all those spaces are on the table for us , so it ’s a topic of finding the right time and the right root to bear out them . We ’d love to do every bit of every inflate Universe thing . On the canon side , we ’ve got some great High Republic visualize that we ’ve tint on in various lines — like , we ’ve got [ Jedi : Survivorvillain ] Dagan Gera , that ’s a cracking High Republic style quality , but he ’s in the Gaming Greats strain . We ’ve suffer theAcolytecharacters in there , that ’s a great good example of that too .
But I think in terms of the definitive stuff and nonsense , the day of remembrance is going to be good times to gossip those ideas , it ’s a great metre to be doing that stuff in the next few geezerhood .

io9 : I ’m glad you mentionedThe Acolyte , because that ’s a show Hasbro really support with a luck of figures across Black Series and Vintage Collection . With the unfortunate newsworthiness that we are n’t getting time of year two , fans were upset we might not see any more build from you croak forward , missing out on characters like Qimir . Even with the show not continuing , is it a series you are all interested in still exploring at somepoint ?
Houle : Never say never , correct ? I experience like we ’re uncoerced to revisit a tidy sum of matter — we’re visit prequels heavier right now for the 20th day of remembrance ofRevenge of the Sith . But I think in worldwide , knowing that rooter have been asking about [ Qimir ] , cognise how popular he is … he ’s definitely on our minds .
io9 : As full as it is to see what ’s come down the grapevine , one thing collector are part to have to contend with correctly now , and have concern over , is the situation especially for U.S. rooter with tariffs at the moment . From Hasbro ’s perspective , manifestly much of this is still in flux density right now , but has the political position begin impacting determination - devising — not just from the business stand , but as something the conception team is cerebrate about ?

Reiff : That ’s the affair as well — we have the same question . Most of those decisions are above our pay gradation , and we ’re deal with it all as it add up along . I ’ll say we ’re committed to the stuff we ’ve get in the grapevine and what ’s going forward . There are no signs of that changing , primarily , with what ’s happening . But yeah : I think we ’ll image it out with everybody else , the accumulator ’s too . We ’re on the roller coaster with you guys too .
io9 : Pivoting away from the serious , let ’s talk light-headed . Theotherbig Black Series surprise of the panel was Turgle in theJedipack . Those are games the team has call a lot already , and we ’re get more , but why was the design team like , “ Yes , nowwe do Turgle ” ?
Houle : There was a request [ from Hasbro ’s married person at Amazon ] for a larger pack , a pack that size of it . And we opened it up to the squad and asked what they wanted to do , and that start up it all rolling in , TurgleandSkoova Stev . I consider Skoova Stev came first ! And then the possibility of Turgle worked out , and it started snowball .

Ireallywanted grey mullet Cal to be a realness in the Black Series too . I would give huge , huge kudos to Eric Franer , and Tom Rego , on the development team . They ’re gamers , you guys know , the whole Black Series team — they’re all vast fans . Eric was definitely push for Turgle and Skoova Stev . We have a lot of gamers on the team , so I cerebrate they were all cheer in their pass as they were all like , ‘ this is happening ! ‘ . This is actually going to be a thing !
And I love the response to is , because it shows how fun it can all be . We ’re having play , there ’s silliness — this is such a fun pack for us to make , and I have it off that we were able to show it here .
Reiff : It ’s the fact thatStar Warsisn’t all Death Troopers and Darth Vaders . There ’s Turgles and Skoova Stevs . It ’s a wandflower of part ! It ’s a really wide spectrum .
