Forget stingy representative commands for iPhones , these guysclaim to have come up with a direction to control them with their psyche . Did these two random dudes just fulfil something that ’s defeated scientist for decade ? Or is it all dogshit ?
Project Black Mirroris in the very former stages of growth — these two hombre , list Ollie and Josh , just came up with the idea over Halloween weekend , but holy crap they claim to already have a working prototype . Here ’s how it supposedly works , from their blog :
1 . ECG pads leave raw skin conduction / electric bodily process as analogue data point ( 0 - 5v ) .
2 . This is secure into the Arduino gameboard via 4 analog remark ( no activity = 0v , eminent activity = 5v ) .
3 . The Arduino has a program combust to it ’s EPROM chip that filters the signals .
4 . Josh direct the programme by mean of the principal Siri command ( “ Call ” , “ Set ” , “ Diary ” etc . ) one at a time and the program where we captured the signature mastermind patterns they produce .
5 . The program can discover the signature patterns that designate a sealed word is being think of . The program will then wait for a natural ‘ expiration ’ in brain waves and sham the chain of commands is now pure and action is required .
6 . The series of commands are prey to a SpeakJet spoken communication synthesiser chip
7 . The audio output of which simply plugs into the iPhone ’s microphone manual laborer .
We still ca n’t believe it really work .
Yeah , I kinda ca n’t either . In fact , it ’s entirely potential ( likely even ) that this is fake and I ’ll face like a puppet for posting this . Call me a yahoo , but I need to believe this Guy . I like their style , with web log entries like , “ this crap might just work ! ” Here ’s a television of one of their first “ successful ” tests .
So , obviously , the organization is cock-a-hoop , bulky , and overly complex justly now , requiring a separate computer and a bunch of ironware . How impractical it is right now is insignificant . Here ’s how it could work ( this is just my possibility ): The ECG pads connect connect to a diminished , pocket - sized machine . That twist connect by Bluetooth to the iPhone 4S , and an app on the phone translates learns your patterns and translate the signaling to Siri . Something like that . This could also potentially solveSiri ’s trouble understand people with accents .

These guys just got commendation from Kickstarter to found a project to fund this gear . Keep checking back for that . If this is real , I really want to see it go on . If it is n’t material and they actually attempt to plunge a Kickstarter Project on the forcefulness of a phony video , it would be pretty major scam and they ’ll probably end up in jail . I think this bet , to be blunt , inconceivable . And I have doubts about its authenticity .
For one , the way you ’ve described EEG data accumulation does n’t seem relate in any meaningful way to how brain wave are in reality collected . If you ’ve simplify for the lay audience , perhaps you ’d care to elabaorate to substantiate your claim .
Also I ’d be very interested to see a demo where the organisation does arbitrary bid on video at the prompting of a neutral percipient .
If I ’m mistaken , and you ’ve made some extraordinary leap in the engineering science then you have my sincerest apologia .
If that ’s the case , we ’d love to know more about your work and will be more than felicitous to promote you in success as you join us and other companies that are working to build a thought - see future .

So there ’s that . And — and this is hard to measure — but there ’s something about their delivery in the videos . It kinda seems like they ’re acting , no ? And not all that well . I ’m afraid I ’ve gone from skeptic to “ dogshit caller ” . If I ’m wrong , then I rationalize to these cuss , but we ’re gon na require some much better cogent evidence .
UPDATE 2 : Further eternal damnation . This time from Greg Courville , an undergraduate cathartic educatee at the University of California :
If you have n’t spotted it already : not only does there seem to be virtually nothing connected to the SpeakJet splintering , it ’s also placed sideways in the breadboard , which shorts a number of vital pins together , and therefore would make it impossible to use .
The project ’s blog claims that “ ECG launch pad offer raw skin conductivity / electric activity as analogue data ( 0 - 5v ) ” . Let ’s go forwards and push aside the fact that they seem to have fuddle EEG with ECG ( which is a completely unlike type of measurement ) , and the spurious reference to “ skin conductivity ” ( ditto ) . The most glaring problem with that statement is the claim that EEG signals fall in an Arduino - friendly 0 - 5V positive electromotive force compass . Suffice it to say they do n’t .
What did Project Black Mirror do ? Based on their publish statements , their YouTube videos and the photo shown below , they link the electrode lead now to the analogue stimulant terminal on the Arduino .
In unretentive , there ’s not even the slightest fortune that they are actually recording EEG signals this way .
