Good Omens‘ New Beelzebub on Her Demonic Transformation

WhenGood Omens render next hebdomad , lover of Prime Video’sNeil Gaiman - Terry Pratchett adaptationwill noticesome interesting matter about the back cast . There are familiar faces playing new characters — and an unfamiliar face playing a familiar case : Shelley Conn ( Bridgerton , Gen V ) as Beelzebub .

We get to see a lot more of Beelzebub as part of her surprising arc in season two ; no plunderer , but any lover of Good Omens bonk most everyone in its existence is prostrate to doing some very unexpected things . Let ’s just say she ’s a lot more than Satan ’s underling and the oftentimes - infuriate boss of Crowley ( David Tennant ) , Shax ( Miranda Richardson ) , and other fiend character this metre around — though she is still both of those things , too .

The appearance transposition is addressed , then cleverly hand - waved away — hey , even hell ’s most threatening creatures like to shift thing up from time to time . For Conn , who steps in for season one ’s Anna Maxwell Martin , the chance was too juicy to pass off up . “ I ’d seen the first season and thought Anna Maxwell Martin did a phenomenal business . I really enjoyed what she did , ” Conn explained to io9 at a late Good Omens closet day . “ And I felt that with the form of handing over of the costume — which is exactly the same as she wore , asunder from we swapped the adult fly for the derby lid , and I put some fishnet gloves on and I think I had a little rowlock that was young , a little fly peg . But it feel like somehow what had been establish still remained . And then , it was there to sort of be build upon because I think there is character development , as there is with all of the characters , and I was able to kind of snap up the billystick and contain on run , with a sentiency of the spirit of what came before with me . ”

Beelzebub ’s costume is n’t the only physically distinctive part of her quality . As fans of time of year one will recall , her make - up is also rather memorable . Or memorably complete , to be more specific . That carried through into Conn ’s portrayal , with some modifications .

“ We hail to the makeup hot seat , starting with the teeth , and that was a deal because they were enormous , ” Conn recalled . “ Then it was like , ‘ Alright , so what do we do now ? ’ We did n’t require to do too much . We found the wigging placement . And then we were like , ‘ Oh , we need to kind of just enhance the eyebrow a little bit more , ’ and then we discover these kind of — what we sort of thought [ count like ] like fly legs come down as eyelashes . ”

speak of flies , Beelzebub tends to be surround by them — and they influenced not just the character ’s eyelashes , but what Conn call “ the scabby - ness ” of her skin . “ The convention that ’s been localise up is that when [ the demon characters ] are in hell , they look utter and dusty and moldy . And when they ’re [ on Earth ] , they bet a little bit more presentable , ” the actress express joy . “ I remember verbalise with the makeup artist , and she was like , ‘ I experience like I just do n’t bed what it is . It ’s like we need to name it . ’ We were kind of like , ‘ What is this , like , maggoty nut thing ? ’ And then we were like , ‘ It ’s fly poo and wing disgorgement . Now we get it on what it is . Let ’s get to work . ’ And then it ’s chilling how slight time I spend in the makeup chairperson to translate to that . It ’s like , ‘ Oh , well , I ’m done . All right . ’ That ’s not in reality that far removed from my own actual face . ”
