When I was 13 I was smoking cigarettes I ’d found on the ground and playing Super Nintendo like it was my life ’s work . This Thomas Kyd discovered a path to draw 20 - 50 % more tycoon from solar cells . He is way of life nerveless .
seventh graderAidan Dwyerwas walk in the woods during the wintertime , and looking up , he noticed something about the unornamented branches above him . They did n’t appear to be growing at random . So he took some measurements of the angles of the branches , munch some issue , and would n’t you sleep together it , he found that the ubiquitousFibonacci Sequencewas behind it all . He suspected there was a grounds behind this . That trees were using this pattern to foregather more light .

So he did an experimentation . Using the same number of solar cell , he build two working models . One was a traditional , monotone array will all of the jury on a individual plane . The other used the Fibonacci Sequence to make the same spiraled pattern he honour in the trees . The results ? The little man himself account :
The tree design made 20 % more electricity and collect 2 1/2 more minute of sunshine during the Clarence Shepard Day Jr. . But the most interesting results were in December , when the Sun was at its lowest distributor point in the sky . The tree design made 50 % more electrical energy , and the collection prison term of sun was up to 50 % longer ! ”
Did you hear that ? All of the smart - hombre in the country who pass their time try out to make solar power more effective were just outsmarted by a thirteen - yr - old and a tree . you could read Aiden ’s exceedingly well - writtenfull - account here . Aiden just won the Young Naturalist Award from the American Museum of Natural History . It ’s kids like this that make me think that just maaaaaybe this country is n’t so shaft after all . Update : contention ! So , over the weekenda blogger posted a sometime that supposedly debunked Aiden ’s design . Here are a couplet points to consider :

The debunking blogger in enquiry removed his Emily Price Post very shortly after he post it . Why , we do n’t know , though I suspect he found inaccuracies in his own Emily Post . For one , I note that he did n’t take into account the fact that Aiden ’s aim collected 2.5 hours more sunshine in October and 50 % more in December . Anyway , sites have been posting corrections left and right , but everyone has been linking to Google ’s webcache of the sometime mail , which seems weird to me . We ’ve reached out to the blogger in doubtfulness and to some other experts in the field , and we ’ll update if there ’s anything deserving bring up .

In the lag , I would cue some commenters that this is a 13 - twelvemonth - former we ’re spill the beans about here . Whether or not you agree with his finding , please do n’t be a dick . Thanks .
