Last night ’s Warehouse 13 was light on the silly humour the show has made its pilothouse lately — although there was a bit of fun with Pete was box — and rather long on the kind of sentimentality that would experience like nonsensical overkill on most TV appearance . And yet , on Warehouse 13 , it more or less work absolutely . ( Although it dances right up to the edge . )
Why is Warehouse 13 capable to pull off scenes like the one above , without feeling manipulative or self - lenient ? ( spoiler below . )
For the most part , it ’s because the writer and actors have done such a bully job of flesh out these characters , they can go to some pretty cheeseball places without feel like we ’re being slapped with a condom chicken of persuasion . Take last night ’s sequence — the business about Steve Jinks ’ dead sister has been built up since the graphic symbol was first introduced , so this was n’t whole an out - of - nowhere Book of Revelation . The trammel between Steve and Claudia has been pretty painstakingly developed as well . And the feeling that Steve , a Buddhist , would turn out to be kind of a revengeful twerp with payback in his heart , feels like layer of case - development rather than a contradiction carry of negligence .

Plus , the whole “ Steve goes home to ma ” storyline benefits from some really strong acting — Laura Innes has been squander in drek like The Event so much lately , you almost forget what she can do when she ’s give some literal stuff . The scene where she ’s seek to reach out to the completely closed - off Steve , with a brittle patience , are really terrific . She gets a lot out of a line like , “ I do n’t want you out of my hair , ” without milking it at all . And Aaron Ashmore and Allison Scagliotti are great , as always .
But also , the whole conception of Warehouse 13 is more and more one that lends itself to a certain amount of persuasion — the artifacts are increasingly being show to be make by emotion and linked to the great unwashed ’s emotional states . In this installment , the key to freeing Steve from the metronome that resurrected him is essentially for him to work things out with his mom and have a katharsis where he has a moment of utter love for her . Meanwhile , in the seeming “ A ” secret plan , a steelworker / pugilist has a shard of ancient sculpture in his heart that gives him superstrength and makes people deform to rusting — which is triggered by strong feel .
Oh , and there ’s also the fact that this show really does feel sincere , in all of its slenderly goofy optimism about people . When mawkishness feel grandiloquent or fake , it ’s usually because you may tell that people are putting it on . Classic Hollywood sentimentality is often a thin racing shell over a bottomless well of abominate for the characters , but this show invests a lot of ingeniousness into showing how good multitude can come through out by helping each other and being clever — similia to the way Eureka often did .

In this fussy episode , self - forfeiture is the key to achiever in both the “ A ” and “ B ” plots — although Pete really does n’t need to let the pugilist / steelworker / Marine beat him to a mush , since Myka already has things under control .
All in all , this was another really strong episode , which went places where most television shows would stammer .
Oh , and in the “ C ” plot , Artie ultimately hashes things out with Mrs. Frederic and H.G. Wells ( plus Leena ) , and they pretty quickly sort out some stuff and nonsense that Artie has been stuck on for weeks . Like , Claudia stabbing Artie with the magic knife probably is n’t the A-one - tremendous wickedness that Brother Data admonish about . And Brother Data probably just severalise Artie not to tell anybody about the astrolabe as part of his overall campaign to isolate Artie . Oh , and I love the matter - of - factness with which Mrs. Frederic severalize Artie , “ I would have done the same . ” No hand - wringing — Artie did the correct affair , let ’s move on .

And then there ’s a coda , where Mrs. Frederic gives H.G. Wells the astrolabe and tells her to disappear , because she ’s already figured out that something might not be quite correct with Artie . ( Although , at the conclusion , when Mrs. Frederic wrench and make a weird spirit to the television camera , is that a breath that this is n’t really the real Mrs. Frederic ? ) In any case , the prevue for next week ’s episode seems to show Artie turn into Brother Data , which is either the thimble at body of work or proof that you guy rope were right all along and Artie is stealing from himself . We ’ll recover out soon !
