Continuum ’s dystopian corporate - dominated future tense , featuring chemic weapons and indenture servitude , is n’t croak to arrive all by itself . There ’s a moment towards the end of “ Wasted Minute , ” the latest episode as aired in the U.S. , where Kiera says she ’s realise she should make decision with her heart more . Given that Kiera has never try on making decisions with her brainiac , my first response was , “ Uh , what ? ”
But I think she ’s hint that mayhap the dystopian future she comes from is n’t looking so rattling any more , and she want to arrest supporting malefic bullshit in the name of preserving the timeline — which , after all , is an generalisation , specially if she does n’t get to see her family again .
In this episode , Kiera faces a choice between two Alecs , and she makes the “ ripe ” choice . At least , the right option if she wants to preserve the time to come and please her new Freelancer masters . She ultimately determine which Alec to get rid of : Hoodie Alec , who travel back from the future , or Suit Alec , the one from this timeline .
As far as I understand it , the Freelancers ’ branching continuum model of spacetime means that a timeline can vary from the others , as long as it does n’t go too far out of alinement . That have in mind it ’s hunky-dory that this novel Liber8 - created timeline is slenderly dissimilar from the others — as long as it ’s only slimly different . To ensure that it does n’t go too far out of whack , we need Alec , the designer of the futurity , to persist on his route to Evil Overlord - dom .
Which entail , as the Freelancer hirer has been pointing out for a while now , the obvious choice is to get disembarrass of Hoodie Alec , who is showing foretoken of compunction and want to shirk his destiny . for good .
Hoodie Alec kind of forces Kiera ’s hired hand . He wants to take to the woods away with Emily and live in Thailand or some other country under the radar , but Suit Alec has shut up him out of all the bank accounts and get a warranty for Emily ’s arrest to go out . So Hoodie Alec needs Kellog ’s avail getting out of the country , and Kellog wants Hoodie Alec to break into Suit Alec ’s computers and steal a few bits of data — plus then Hoodie Alec can erase all the evidence Suit Alec has against Emily .
Unfortunately , Suit Alec enamor Hoodie Alec breaking into his accounts and rushes back to the office — where Hoodie Alec knocks him out cold . When Suit Alec wakes up , he and Hoodie Alec struggle , until Hoodie Alec holds Suit Alec at point . And Hoodie Alec evidence Suit Alec he bang that they ’re both still in sexual love with Emily , because Suit Alec had Emily ’s files lock up close on his computer .
That ’s where Kiera arrives , and knock Hoodie Alec out . She hauls him down to the Freelancer HQ , where they stick him in one of their see - thru cages , interchangeable to the one Kiera was locked inside at the end of last season . Even though this seems like a perfect solution to the “ Two Alecs ” job , the Freelancer boss seems kind of put out that Kiera did n’t just ice him . Because that ’s the usual solution when you have two of the same individual .
eccentric in point : Just as Kiera is talking to the Freelancers , she finally gets the cleaned - up video of her own murder . ( Or rather , the murder of her alternate self . ) And it was Curtis , the Freelancer who had infiltrate Liber8 back in 2077 , who pulled the trigger . Naively , Kiera believes that Curtis was acting alone — but it ’s clear he was doing this under orders . And that ’s probably one reason why the Freelancers charge Kiera , rather than one of their own , back in time in the first position . Easier to reprobate a version of a alien to last .
Of course , the whole “ bolt down the twin person ” insurance is kind of silly in any case — you ’re still left with a corpse that ’s hard to excuse . Unless the Freelancers invent a unfailing way of getting disembarrass of a body wholly , leaving no forcible grounds or DNA , they ’re still creating a potential paradox . As Carlos , sit down on Kiera ’s dead body , could demonstrate .
The “ grammatical case of the week ” in this episode , meanwhile , seems design to crowd Kiera ’s buttons and make her question her commitment . Sonmanto ’s lawyer claims it ’s harmless , but Kiera shortly realizes it could be turned into a lethal chemical weapon — and after they raid a Liber8 facility where it ’s being weaponized , she realizes it ’s in reality the same chemical substance weapon that was used on her in the hereafter . She only live exposure because she ’s already immunized .
At first , Kiera consider Liber8 wants to launch a chemical onset on Vancouver , wiping out the whole urban center — but that ’s the strategy of old Liber8 . The new Liber8 is more focused on public - telling triumph , so instead they back the tanker full of potentially deadly wasteland up to the Sonmanto headquarters and have their attorney bring out the truth .
With the helper of Hoodie Alec , Kiera incur out that the Sonmanto attorney go to Dubai to meet with revolutionary Jihadist Chechen separatists , offering them the chemical weapons for use in their fighting . And Sonmanto was going to sit down on the counterpoison until they could deal it for the maximal amount . Carlos gets hold of this info and arrests the Sonmanto lawyer — clear Carlos a rap on the knuckles from Dillon , who say you do n’t side with the bad guys . Carlos has loose words , as long as he does n’t practice it with any cameras nearby .
In the former timeline , Carlos changed incline and went over to Liber8 really , really promptly — and either he ’s just having a ecumenical nervous crack-up in this timeline or we ’re find out that same chemise happen much more slow .
In any cause , Kiera seems genuinely surprised to realize that Sonmanto made not just the counterpoison but the artillery as well . Even after everything else she ’s check , she still has some uncanny idea that the collective congress was basically just , and that she was carry on constabulary and fiat and stuff .
One of the most interesting moments in last nighttime ’s sequence is when the Freelancer foreman read Kiera felt well about being part of something large , when she was in the CPS ( the future cop . ) The Vancouver police ca n’t be that for Kiera , because they do n’t realise her real foreign mission — but the Freelancers can . Of course , the Freelancers have n’t exactly been super trustworthy , and have barely given Kiera the employee preference . Even aside from vote out her other ego , there ’s the issue of that mysterious doorway they ’re not letting her see behind .
All in all , in a show that ’s screw for speedy secret plan twist and somewhat rushed character turns , Continuum is take its time selling the approximation of Kiera ’s slow change of heart about the future she come from — and how much she ’s unforced to stomach to make it hap . Which is a good thing , since I suspect that ’s the overall arc of the series , and we ’re going to have to think in the close result .
