The Doctor and the Daleks are sort of like Batman and the Joker . They ’ve been oppose each other so long , they practically delimit each other . And tonight ’s Doctor Who season opener made a secure showcase that the Doctor ’s kinship with the Daleks has gotten unhealthy , on both sides . Can counseling help ?

Back in time of year five , the Daleks concocted an elaborate system to get the Doctor ’s validation . Literally . They needed the Doctor to “ know ” them as the Daleks so that some Dalek replicator would activate , so they profess to be World War II combat robots and pass away around serving tea leaf . All just so the Doctor would blackguard “ You are the Daleks ” into their mike .
This time around , the Daleks have concocted another detailed schema to charm the Doctor , so they can send him on a mission on their behalf . “ carry through the Daleks , hold start the Daleks , ” they clamour in , a totally unhopeful presentation of privation .
The Daleks have a planet called the Asylum , where they ’ve dumped all the Daleks who are too mad or freaky , and now a human starliner has crashed there . The Daleks are interested that if world can get in , then all the gaga Daleks can get out , so they just desire to zap the planet and have done with it . Unfortunately , there ’s a forcefield around the planet that can only be turn off from the aerofoil , and the forcefield will permit in starliners and teleport beams , but not any weapons of mass destruction . ( You could n’t just teleport down a large bomb calorimeter , because plotty wotty . ) The Daleks are too frightened to meet their own insane relatives , so they send the Doctor and his two most recent companions , instead .
( Side note : It ’s middling cagey of the Daleks to figure out that Amy and Rory are the precise right companions to send along with this Doctor . It would have been sort of hilarious if they ’d randomly kidnap Ace and Victoria , instead . )
The plot , though , is mostly just an self-justification to explore the Doctor ’s ongoing human relationship with the Daleks , and to show how pitiful it ’s gotten . The account starts with a big soliloquy about how the Doctor is the one man who ’s fight the Daleks all these years , and then the speaker of that soliloquy later tells the Doctor that the Daleks call him the Predator . When she tells the Doctor that “ they say ” he can hold on the Daleks , he respond , “ I wish they ’d contain ” ( articulate that . )
The Dalek Prime Minister — is anybody else a bit weirded out by the notion of the Daleks having parliamentary commonwealth rather than an authoritarian regime ? — explains the understanding why the Daleks have never been capable to demolish the Doctor . They hate the Dr. so much , and they think hate is the most beautiful affair in the universe . This is also why they have n’t been able-bodied to bring themselves to destruct the Asylum , which is full of Daleks who are wracked with “ godlike ” hatred .
So then the Doctor is glow down to the Asylum satellite , where he ’s surrounded by broken Daleks that he ( in some case in person ) drove harebrained . It ’s almost too spoilt the Daleks in the Asylum are largely out of commission and kind of messed up , because the whim of the Doctor trapped on a satellite full of insane Daleks at full speciality would have been pretty intense . As it is , the Daleks are sort of abeyant and/or lacking full - power implements of war , so they ’re sort of intermittently dangerous .
Meanwhile , the biggest threat on the planet come from humans who ’ve been turned into sort of Dalek - hoi polloi by a drove of “ nanogenes ” that translate any constituent textile on the surface . Living or utter . You get a kind of Dalek eyestalk come out of your forehead , and sometimes also a Dalek gun coming out of your hand — we find this early on with the woman who lures the Doctor into the Dalek sand trap , and then again with most of the survivors of the starliner crash . And then Amy is in danger of being Dalekified as well — provide another direction to calculate at what makes a Dalek a Dalek . ( You subtract love and add hate , fundamentally . More on this in a second . )
Finally , we come in to the crux of the matter of the storey : the Doctor has made the Daleks stronger . Just like some late Batman stories have explored the notion that Batman makes the Joker the Joker , now we ’re get the theme that the Daleks would n’t have been intimately so sorry if they had n’t been push by fright and hatred of the Doctor . It ’s lawful that the Daleks are n’t awfully formidable in their first narrative , trapped in a tiny city they ca n’t leave behind , and then suddenly the next time we see them they ’ve occupy Earth . In any case , the Doctor has been try out to stop fighting the Daleks , because he ’s only making them more powerful by fighting them .
This all goes back to the notion that the Doctor “ got too big ” and want to step back — and the notion that he makes his foe tough and creates bigger problems than he clear was also brought up back in “ A Good human race Goes to War . ”
We also see the filthy version of Matt Smith ’s Doctor that we ’ve seen thus far , with him being downright stand for to the woman who calls for his help salvage her daughter from a Dalek hard worker camp . ( She ’s not genuine and it ’s a cakehole , of course . ) Later , run into a ship full of corps , the Doctor much chortles . Matt Smith is convey a wonderfully sardonic note to the Doctor , as if the 200 yr he spent running away from the Silence have left him a tidy sum more rough around the edges .
To a large extent , the story of “ Asylum of the Daleks ” is about showing that the Doctor ’s relationship with the Daleks is insalubrious — and then showing him getting a divorcement . At the end of the story , the Daleks have as if by magic leave all about the Doctor , and they do n’t have any cue who this man is , and why his drear box is sitting in the middle of their Parliament , and so on . They ’re off tag a different cat toy instead . ( And the Doctor is content to escape from the Parliament — I could n’t help feel that Tennant ’s Doctor would have blown them all up somehow . )
The agent of all this is Oswin , who ’s basically the footling young lady from “ Silence in the Library ” with a dash of Miss Evangelista and one or two other characters . She was the next-to-last entertainment manager on that crashed starliner , but she ’s also a A-one - ace — so instead of just turning her into a Dalek - person , the nanogenes did a “ full spiritual rebirth ” and change by reversal her into a proper Dalek . She could n’t handle the accuracy , so she retreated into a virtual fancy dreamworld , where she ’s wearing a sassy red attire , listening to opera , and making souffles . ( And I opine the souffle are made with eggs , and as Rory reminds us ahead of time on , “ nut ” is the first syllable of “ Exterminate . ” So the souffles represent her repress Dalek nature , all incinerate and nasty . )
Although you might notice that Oswin is play by Jenna - Louise Coleman , who is move to be the Doctor ’s newfangled companion this Christmas . So there may be something more to her than meets the eye , actually . ( fit in to various situation , the new companion is named “ Clara Oswin , ” reverse Oswin ’s first name into a last name . )
And the Daleks are basically the Borg now . They use nanotech to plough people into Daleky troopers . And they have a hive head , which can be hack by someone who ’s become one of them . ( It ’s not a hive mind , we ’re told , it ’s a telepathic “ path web . ” But it ’s brawny enough to be able-bodied to erase the knowledge of the Daleks ’ ultimate enemy from every single Dalek ’s consciousness . Everywhere . )
So if the Doctor vex “ too bad ” is creditworthy for the Daleks buzz off so evil , what are we to make of this ? Is gallantry a bad thing ? Should we not bother to fight wickedness , lest we indirectly cause it to become more herculean in response ? Is apathy the new heroics ? In real life , if we see evil occurrent , should we turn a unsighted center , lest we just plague it to become nasty ? I want to link back tothe rant that John Ostrander drop a line after “ A Good Man Goes to War ” air , in which he basically say that the Doctor should n’t ever apologize for crusade evil , and we should n’t ever stop celebrating valorousness .

Meanwhile , Amy and Rory are have a relationship meltdown of their own , and their kinship is revealed to be just as dysfunctional as that of the Doctor and the Daleks . Rory finally come out and says it : he love Amy more than she loves him . This has been sort of the point of their relationship all along , but now it ’s out in the out-of-doors . And if you have that as the mythology of your relationship , that ’s probably not frightfully healthy , actually . Rory points out that he waited 2,000 years outside a box for Amy , back when he was an Auton . ( One wonders if Auton cognizance processes time the direction humans do . )
But it turn out that Amy was actually being terribly noble and have sex by split up Rory — she ca n’t have children , because of whatever they did to her when she was pay parentage to River Song . And she have intercourse that Rory has always wanted children , so she wanted to prepare him free and get him have kids with someone else .
( So what exactly did they do to her at Demon ’s ravel ? Was this not a normal manner of speaking ? And why is n’t Amy a uneasy wreck by now ? ) fundamentally , Amy was listening totoo much Sting .
Amy and Rory ’s relationship gets sorted out , largely because Amy ’s becoming a Dalek - ette , and the only cure for this is to bear on to your love and not let the Daleks take it away . ( And yes , that was the same thing that save Craig from becoming a Cyberman , last season . marvellous affair , sexual love . ) Amy has to remember her dear for Rory , or she ’ll risk being Dalek identified — something that ’s aggrandize in a really beautiful way when we see from Amy ’s item of view , and she sees a roomfull of Daleks as mass , dance . That ’s the skilful aspect in the sequence , for my money : the Daleks - as - dancing - people sequence .
It all begin back to the theme of memory , which is one of Moffat’sgo - to themeson the show . Early on , the Doctor tells Amy and Rory the only thing they can do is “ make them retrieve you . ” And then , instead , they make the Daleks block them . The people who ’ve been Dalek - ized have fake memories , or have repressed their real memories except when they need them for “ deep covert . ” And Amy has to hold on to her memories of Rory , to stay Amy . And Oswin ’s memory board , along with her sensory faculty of reality , are completely borked and fake .
Does Steven Moffat have a master key plan for Doctor Who ?
In the end , the Doctor is see reveling in his newfound anonymity , dancing around the TARDIS while shouting the show ’s title . ( In imitation of the agency that Dorium holler it at the ending of “ The marriage of River Song . ” ) So where is all this heading ? It looks like we ’re still in the heart of an electric arc , where the Doctor is in the process of getting less “ big ” — but then is he going to present the consequences of step back into the shadow ? Is he going to leave a MD - sized vacuum cleaner behind ? Or will he be more effective at fight monster like the Daleks , now that they have no cue who he is and he can be all sneaky about it ?
I guess we ’ll find out , probably mostly in 2013 . But chance are , the Daleks will be back this season , since the newfangled companion seems to be linked well with them . I ’m betting on a Dalek - y season finale .
