It seemed like just another canonical cable skill fiction drama . Aliens invade Earth , and pretty actor — many of them musical style alumnus — are pull into colonies where they plot to stop the aliens . The natural action is great , but the family moment are treacly enough to give you fall Skies flashbacks . But Colony is actually well , guy wire . It ’s really , really good .

spoiler for Colony beyond this point …

The good start in the pilot — though it has lilliputian to do with the premise as presented for the first three tail of that episode . Husband Will ( that ’d be the Holloway ) is a nice guy who work as a truck equipment driver and auto mechanic and jazz his kinsperson and is , like , super bummed that one of his kid was in Santa Monica when the alien attack — because they have n’t determine that Thomas Kyd since . But when Will tries to let out out of the colony to find his Logos , we discover he ’s on the Q.T. a former Army Ranger and FBI agentive role , and the leaders of the colony need Will ’s help to hunt down resistance forces still in the metropolis .

How convenient .

Will is forced into working for the line of work that ’s destroy his man and kept him from his son , and yeah , that could be a middling okay show — at least a footstep above the piping live pile that was Fallen Skies . yammer badass , with lovely sept at home , joins forces with Carl Weathers to defend the resistance and carry on a raw and terrifying human beings society that neither man agree with .

But then the last five moment of the installment clock in , and we instruct that Will ’s wife , Katie ( Sarah Wayne Callies ) , is part of that resistance — and is now be after to sight on her husband for it . It ’s a wild twisting for a show that often exploit hard to be milquetoast .

Yet since then , Colony has taken more and more risks . This show is joyously certain of itself . It takes big risks and kills off outstanding character actor , because it ’s propel like a loading train towards an end that I honestly ca n’t foresee . And in every instalment , the show takes time to take a step back from the plot line ( some of which , like the baby having a sexy liaison with a collaborator , or the teenage Word exit on campaign outside the colony , are downright rat ) and pursue the actual themes of a show about victim of a emphatic occupation . It ’s not afraid to dig into these theatrical role , and treat them as more than plot points navigating from item A to point B.

Specifically , Katie and Will and their simmering idealogical war . The two of them come in from very different backgrounds , and they have very different ideas on how to deal with the job ( alien ) at hand . He wants to play nice until they can escape , and she want to burn the whole damn thing down . The conflict alone is great , but the show refuses to permit it get in the way of these two people genuinely loving one another . When they finally put their wit on the table and reveal the whole slew of duplicitous actions they ’ve been piling up this time of year , it ’s just effective drama . Colony is happy to toddle about in the grey of morality and let us see both side .

This is not something I expected to see from a show on USA .

Starship Test 9

And meanwhile , the show has at long last started to dig into its science fiction elements . Until latterly , Colony was a straight - up dramatic event , with the scientific discipline - fable stuff firmly in the background . The extraterrestrial being of the show are the “ speak about , but never seen ” kind , and our only intimation that the world has n’t just been taken over by a group of jackasses is in the enormous walls that spring up around the colonies and the trailer that descend whenever there ’s conflict and the eery factories where misbehaving people are sent and never render from . Otherwise , Colony is a show that could be set in France in the former 40s . ( I would give anything to see Josh Holloway in a proper suit and chapeau . )

Last workweek ’s sequence gave us our first honest to God look at an alien — though the puppet was wrapped up in a coolheaded techno cause out of something like Mass Effect .

The show also pay us our first coup d’oeil of lifespan in another settlement — specifically Santa Monica , where Will and Katie ’s Logos has been surviving as a street crumb . While both those glimpses sense more like the game of a video game ( Katie ’s impeccable and satisfy target with a triggerman does n’t avail matters ) , this is still more scientific discipline fiction than we got the earlier part of the season .

Lilo And Stitch 2025

As the series ’s world starts to expand , and the the status quo dramatically shifts , the show is maintaining the solid entertainment factor it ’s had since the ending of episode one . If it keeps this up , it could rick into one of the most entertaining dystopian shows of the last few year ( its definitely more affirmative than The Walking Dead ) .
