Blade II is not as effective as you remember . That is , assuming you even like it in the first place . Back in 2002 , I consider the film in theaters and wish it so much I rushed out to grease one’s palms the DVD when it was give up . However , revisit the early Guillermo del Toro film this week did n’t bring back fond retention — but it still may be as important a Guillermo del Toro picture as anything else he ’s done , right up tothis workweek ’s The Shape of Water .

Like any honest sequel , Blade II take what fan liked about the first moving picture , gives them more of it , and adds to the mythology . This metre around , Wesley snipe ’ Blade squad up with a vampire army called the Blood Pack ( who were groom to kill him ) to contain an even worse threat — a intercrossed species called the reaper , who course on humans as well as vampires .

The first thing I noticed rewatching Blade II was the indorse cast . Norman Reedus , in fussy . In 2002 , he was but a semi - recognisable character actor , many year off from hitting mega - star status thanks to his office as Daryl on AMC ’s The Walking Dead . In Blade II he ’s the half - vampire / half - human ’s ripe - deal man , Scud . Martial arts superstar ( and Rogue One standout ) Donnie Yen also has a modest persona , as does del Toro mainstay ( and his then - future Hellboy ) Ron Perlman .

find out vampires getting dust is still a highlight , and , this being a del Toro movie , the practical effects and creature are great . The agency the chin of the reapers break heart-to-heart to form almost a preying mantid , complete with an H.R. Giger - esque alien popping out , is gruesome and totally awesome . The same can be said for the reaper makeup , the autopsy scene , and most of the force that punctuates the action . All of that is very much in personal credit line with a talented filmmaker , who was quick developing a very distinct vision .

Unfortunately , the rest of the movie is n’t as interesting . The plot is essentially Blade fighting a crowd of multitude , then talking to a clustering of people , then fighting a bunch of people , then talking to a crew of the great unwashed , and keep repeating . Over and over . The twist is decorous , but not that surprising .

The film ’s numerous and extended action conniption are passable , not because of the fighting itself , but because del Toro has a weapons fetish . Deaths are doled out with nerveless , unique gadgets — a sunshine grenade , bet gun , or poison wrist knives . Everything beyond that feel choreographed and illogical .

slip in tip : midway through the motion picture Blade and his stock Pack are in a club fighting some reapers . They are unloading every weapon they have on these Guy , bullets , blade , whatever … everything except the one that actually ends up working , which is the focussed ray of luminosity on the end of their gun . It take constantly until someone even thinks to reverse on their light , and even then it ’s not just an immediate “ Hey , everyone habituate your Inner Light and nothing else . ” They still kick and plug and fire guns , when all they needed to do was alternate a little electric switch and the conflict would have been over .

Now , this could arguably be explained by the fact that everyone in the Blood Pack except for Blade would also be mortally bruise by the luminance , but later in the movie , they find plenty of ways to get around this . Little affair like this should n’t weigh in a movie , but they start to stick out when the story gets so monotone that your wit involve something to think about .

And yet , throughout the pic Snipes is befittingly badass . Reedus , Perlman , and Kris Kristofferson are all excellent . There are some excellent phonograph needle drop , including “ Name of the Game ( Calling All Freaks ) ” by Crystal Method . Plus , oddly , the film ’s worst effect — long , wide shot of CG action scenes — are actually somewhat endearing because at least they ’re different from everything else . Blade II is n’t a failure by any means — it ’s just one of those movies whose memory of it preponderate its reality .

The realness , though , is that Blade II was a huge strike . It gross three times its budget , which allowed more Blade movies to get made and allowed Guillermo del Toro to make a Hellboy moving-picture show , which then allow him to make Pan ’s Labyrinth ( as well as another Hellboy movie ) . Sure , his former films like Cronos and Devil ’s Backbone pave the elbow room for Blade , but at that time Blade II was his biggest bang by far , make it a Brobdingnagian reason why del Toro is the filmmaker we make love and love today . So even if Blade II does n’t admit up , it ’s still an important moment for one of fandom ’s favorite directors . And for that , all is forgiven .
