Are you glad now , Park City ? After a design addition to the Kimball Art Center spark public scandalisation over the design — an awesome , spiraling logarithm cabin from distance — the architects behind the proposal , Bjarke Ingels Group , have unveiled an austere new design .
BIG’soriginal designfor the addition was chosen by museum administrators all the way back in 2012 . The winning concept was a weird and interesting take on local computer architecture — a magniloquent , curve structure made from Lincoln Log - similar electron beam that seemed to tower over its surround . Its timberland facade , according to the architects , took a clue from Park City ’s own countryfied charm :
Locals , however , did not see it that way . They see it as a sore , woodland - clad thumb , sticking out over their quaint resort town . An outcry over the design ensued , with neighbors debate the building — bring an internationally renowned architect to an out of the way western metropolis to give a new , world - social class architectural identity to an challenging ethnic initiation in the city center — would somehow drive down attribute note value .
So , rather than bear a long engagement to gain approval needed to build it , the Kimball and BIG decide to junk the building and start over from the get-go .
The new design , bring out earlier this calendar month , is ridiculously anon. — it could be literally anywhere — in contrast to the outre and wonderful original . From the looks of it , it ’s little more than a plain concrete loge — a dugout of sorts . Instead of straining , wiggly wood we get simple-minded , orthogonal casting - in - lieu concrete . But it ’s a Brobdingnagian — and almost hilarious — loss from the personality and warmth of the original design .
