“ Sub Rosa ” was a very foreign episode ofStar Trek : The Next Generation , an older - schooling medieval adventure feature a haunted candle , a sepulchral Casanova , and just enough scifi gimcrack to keep the whole thing from being magic .
That Casanova , who used the power of being asexy alien ghostto seduce Dr. Beverly Crusher and her grandmother , was identify Ronin , and was played by Canadian actor Duncan Regehr , who also played Shakaar on Deep Space Nine . Recently , Trek Moviesat down with the actor to get his take on Ronin and his seductive magnate , all these years later . All in all , he was a good sport about it .
“ Ronin was the quintessential romantic figure , ” Regehr said . “ Byronesque and a bit like Dracula , in a parasitic room . I really enjoyed the role and the approximation of two lovers enjoined as one being … also run with Jonathan Frakes . We were neighbors at the metre . He has a wonderful sense of humor and a highly affirmative approach . As a director he ’s an actor ’s dreaming . ”

The whole mould , Regehr say , was a delectation to work with , and even though the episode was a whole mess , he seemed to find a mountain of joyfulness work on it .
“ And beautiful Gates [ McFadden , who played Dr. Crusher ] , ” Regehr said , “ what a delight ! Full of idea , she is one level-headed player , as is Patrick [ Stewart ] . I echo our first meeting : He stand up in front of me and looked straight into my eye , challenging me in a friendly way to hold his gaze , which I did . I pronounce , ‘ Give us a kiss then ! ’ and he reply , ‘ Oh you ’ll do ! ’ ”
Now I ’m imagining a wonderful fanfic world where Ronin seduce Picard rather of Crusher . And as for the colloquial name of “ sex taper ghost ” ? He ’d never take heed of it , but Regehr seems like a sports fan .
